Critic Arthur Mizener called Tender is the Night “brilliant” and “the most profoundly moving” of all Fitzgerald’s novels.” Fitzgerald poured so much of himself and his own life into the work it becomes a tragic, yet compelling confessional. A perceptive chronicler of the thin line between American success and failure, Fitzgerald created his Tender protagonist Dick Diver, an American psychiatrist of charm and skill who marries a woman who needs his professional help and causes his decline. In addition, we will read a group of Fitzgerald’s greatest short stories: “Bernice Bobs Her Hair,” “May Day,” “Absolution,” “The Rich Boy,” and “Babylon Revisited."
