In 1900, Frank Baum wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and it became a best-seller. The book has often been interpreted in the light of American history at the turn of the twentieth century. In 1939, the book was made into the iconic MGM movie starring Judy Garland. Through lectures about the historical times, this class will examine the book’s literary and cultural significance and the production of the movie.
